Cops 2.0: One year later

November 19, 2009
By Christa Miller

balloonsYesterday was Cops 2.0′s “blogiversary,” one year since I started blogging about law enforcement and social media. This is the only blog I have ever stuck with consistently for that long, and I’m proud of that. Thanks to all of you subscribers, occasional visitors, retweeters, and lurkers for sticking with me. I know these are tricky issues for you!

When I started, I had a vague idea in my head that I hoped to build a consultancy from it: that the more I learned about social media and how law enforcement agencies could apply it, the better position I’d be in to help them apply it.

What I’ve found is, however, you folks are doing a great job of “consulting” from the inside, all by yourselves. You’re taking what you read here and at ConnectedCOPS, at Police Blog 2.0 and the Crime Map and DailySplice.com, and putting it in front of chiefs and captains and public information officers.

Sometimes you were already on the ball, and what I wrote validated what you thought all along. Other times you weren’t sure what you wanted to do in this space, but then you read something I wrote and were able to get real ideas going.

I could not be more thrilled that I am helping you do that. Ideas like this best come from the inside. You know your chiefs and fellow cops and communities best; you know what they can and can’t handle, where they’re most likely to be and how they’ll get value from your social media use.

All “milestone” dates are a mix of looking back and looking forward. Seeing how far you’ve come, and where you want to go next. So let me ask you, readers:

What would you like to see from Cops 2.0 over the coming year?

Congrats Christa from Ontario, Canada. I find your posts very useful and share them often with colleagues from the Ontario Provincial Police and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. Keep up the good work!

“MAHALOS!” for all you’ve done for the law enforcement community, on & offline.
You got my support out here in the middle of the Pacific.
BTW, now that the Honolulu Police Department has a new Chief, he might be receptive to venturing into the realm of social media. Maybe a little “blue bird” should give him a “tweet”?
    ;)

Happy Blogriversary! Not sure what the appropriate gift is for the first. First anniversary is the Paper Anniversary, so perhaps I should take a picture of a notebook and send it to you ;-) Anyway, congratulations, you’re doing a great job my friend.

Outstanding web-site and congrats on one year blogging about police related issues. I have over 23 years on this job and have always said us cops are terrible at selling what we do. This site is awesome, i just linked it to my associations page. Thank you for the work your doing here.
