Aloha Christa,
You and Danny brought up good points on using the tiered approach in regards to online social networking. It is no different (with a very few exceptions) to our offline contacts and relationships. For example, at the gym I work out at I have a core that I "bond" with. There are a few from that group that I go out on "wine & dine" nights. Some members of that "wine & dine" group are NOT people from the gym, but are just long time friends.
I decide on who I socialize with and have a say in how a particular social group is comprised.
Online, we don't have have that luxury, unless we use multiple accounts from the same service or a combination of services. I've already seen some officers already doing it and I've been doing it for quite awhile (stemming from my online UC days).
But it can be done. But it takes a lot effort and planning by the officer.
Maybe one day there will be a service that will allow a "granulated" process of creating and maintaining your "friends" and "followers".
Aloha!

Thanks Danny! I knew about the Facebook privacy changes but the screen they gave me was much less granular than what you are talking about. I agree about the confusion -- but hopefully reading a guide like "<a href="http://www.facebook.com/topic.php?uid=73324031068&topic=9111" rel="nofollow">10 Privacy Settings Every Facebook User Should Know</a>" will help.

Thanks for agreeing to be interviewed! I really appreciate it!

Christa... thanks for selecting me as your subject! Well written and I hope the point gets across to readers.

I wanted to update you and other readers that Facebook just updated their privacy settings now and I see A LOT more control over who can see what. In fact, you can apparently now add a friend to your account, but add them to a "list" you create. You can then limit friends on certain lists from seeing certain things!

As an example, I can now apparently allow my friend - "Mr. Smith" - to be my "friend" on Facebook, add him to a list I call "limited," and set it up so that those on the "limited" list cannot see my pictures, comments, etc. It is very granular, but can be very confusing for average users. I am going to test it out and see what happens with a test account!

Great job on the story!

Excellent article--I have not looked into this tool for a couple of years. Your article has convinced me to revisit the idea.

Thanks Lauri! Are those groups pretty active? I have noticed that other LE-related ones are not so much -- I think because of the few non-exec-level officers on the site. Maybe between the two of us, we can get more at all levels to join? :)
