Canadian PM Trudeau says he'll work closely with Trump

Republican nominee Donald Trump is leading in key battleground states.

The particularly abrupt plunge of the Mexican peso signalled expectations that the southern neighbour might feel the most effects. The loonie fluctuated too.

If you're interested, there are three main ways you can move to Canada. President Obama nixed it but Trump supports the pipeline though he has said he wants a share of the profits. "Canada" was a leading USA trend on Twitter, with more than 1 million tweets.

Drury also believes that New Zealand as well as non-American technology companies would benefit from a Trump victory to the White House.

Trump softened his tone on the brief stopover he made to meet Pena Nieto, telling a news conference it was important to keep manufacturing in North America and describing Mexican-Americans as "spectacular, hard-working people". That may cause jitters to the north, given that Canada sends three-quarters of its exports south. But Canada is willing to have the conversation.

"I think any agreement can be improved", said David MacNaughton, the country's ambassador to Washington.

He cited one example of something he'd like to see added to the deal - softwood lumber, a perennial trade irritant.

MacNaughton said if NAFTA was scrapped, the original Canada-U.S. trade agreement that predated NAFTA would come back into force and he said he doubted the Americans would want to end that.

The U.S. president has the power to rescind NAFTA but policymakers on both sides of the border consulted by Reuters said Trump would come under heavy pressure from Congress and business leaders not to wreck trade.

In order to move to the country, U.S. citizens would need to apply for a residency permit, typically stipulating a move for work or family reasons.

His campaign literature suggested he'd invite TransCanada reapply for a permit.

Warren Everson, vice-president of policy at the Canadian Chamber of Commerce, said Trudeau and his team must craft an environmental policy that acknowledges the new path in the United States.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau promised to work with the new president-elect, while diplomatic officials signalled a willingness to sit down and talk about NAFTA.

-Refugees. Trudeau differs dramatically with Trump here. His son tweeted a comparison to a bowl of Skittles, where only one bad one can kill you.

Fen Hampson, the head of the global security program at the Centre for International Governance Innovation in Waterloo, Ont., says Canada should now focus on preserving its trade agreement with Europe and expanding its reach into Asia. The current administration even looked to emulate Canada's system for privately sponsoring refugees - another US project potentially in limbo.

Some Americans have been saying for a while that they'd move to Canada if Donald Trump won.

Trump did not mention Canada by name, but in recent years it has lagged most other allies in terms of military spending as a percentage of its economy.
