Churches prepare for a Christmas that falls on Sunday

Peace Lutheran Church & Preschool, 219 E. St. Anne St., will hold a Christmas Eve candlelight service at 7 p.m. December 24.

Second Presbyterian Church, 600 Pleasant Valley Drive, will have a Faith and Grief luncheon noon-1 p.m. Tuesday with Beverly Speck as speaker. Guest speakers and lots of candies.

Crestwood Baptist Church, 530 Motor Road, will present "Let All Heaven and Nature Sing" at 7 p.m. Sunday. Trinity Episcopal Church is located at 815 N. Grant St. Friends of Music will host a reception in the guild room following the service.

Ultimately, Peters said, the service is designed "to remind us that God is near, especially as Christmas approaches". The cost of the meal is $5. RSVP to 483-8486 or 229-9711. All are welcome. The service will be followed by fellowship, treats and a visit from Santa.

Christmas Day falls on a Sunday this year, and most metro-area church leaders said their houses of worship will offer church services, though some activities may be streamlined.

Genesis Lutheran Church, 102 Walnut St., Piedmont, will hold its Christmas Eve service at 5 p.m. on December 24. The feature service will begin at 5:30 p.m. Sunday with the children's department presenting "A Rockin' Royal Christmas", a musical play telling the story of King Herod, who hires detective Sherlock Watson to gather information about a rumored, mysterious baby king.

Candlelight Christmas Eve Communion services will be held at 5 and 7 p.m. December 24. A traditional Christmas Service is offered on Christmas Day at 9 a.m. Child care is available. A worship service will be held at 11 a.m. December 25. Volunteer two hours any day Monday through Friday 10 a.m.to 4 p.m. Marlene Hudson, 423-817-8332, to help with food, Bob Smith, 423-246-3966. The 10 p.m. service will feature a string quartet from the Arkansas Symphony Orchestra performing Corelli's Christmas Concerto.

The Rev. Jim Peters, pastor of Our Savior's, said the church has had weekly services on Wednesday nights during Advent starting November 30.

HEAVENLY REST CHURCH: Abingdon, Va., 16420 Black Hollow Road. Traditional candlelight services are held at 7:30, 9, and 11 p.m. Christmas morning service is hosted at 11 a.m. Christmas Day. The Memorial Handbells will give a concert at 10:30 p.m.

The Art Porter Singers, directed by Sterling Ingram, will perform Handel's Messiah at 5 p.m. Sunday at Bethel African Methodist Episcopal Church, 815 W. 16th St.

Prairie View United Methodist Church, 28309 Sunny Brook Road, Smithwick, will hold a Christmas Eve worship service at 5 p.m. December 24. Step away from the hustle and bustle; enjoy a bowl of soup, devotion and conversation.

Winterville Baptist Church, 2593 Church St., Winterville, will celebrate the fourth Sunday in Advent with a worship service at 10:15 a.m. Sunday.

Overhills Community Church, 948 Overhills Road, Linden. 43 and 628, Leesville Road and Mentow Drive, followed by a time for fellowship. Nursery provided. 977-8991 or 893-3012. The annual live outdoor Nativity will take place at 6 p.m. Sunday on the corner of Church and Main streets.

Faith Wesleyan Church, 2922 Legion Road. The church will be host to the Triad Area-Wide Christian Men's Summit from 9:30 a.m.to 3:30 p.m. January 14.

New Life Baptist Church, 6501 Camden Road. Holy Eucharist will be celebrated at 5 p.m. December 25. The service will be held in the chapel in church's middle building.
