Despite Obamacare's Uncertain Future, Millions Sign Up

"Nearly a million consumers have left their contact information to hold their place in line", Counihan said in a statement.

The Department of Health and Human Services announced Thursday evening that it was extending by two business days the deadline for open enrollment for Obamacare coverage, which was scheduled to close at midnight last night.

The deadline to enroll through the federal exchange is now 11:59 p.m.

Thursday is another big day for Heathcare.gov because December 15 is the last day people can sign up or make changes to their current plan which takes effect January 1. Healthcare.gov handles ACA insurance sales for the 38 states that don't run their own exchanges for individual and family insurance plans.

They've also warned that even a multi-year "delay" of the repeal would likely wreak havoc for many patients who have coverage through Obamacare.

Millions of Americans have already signed up for coverage and tens of thousands more were in the process of getting coverage Thursday, Counihan said.

The head of NY State of Health, Donna Frescatore, said this season's open enrollment period has been the busiest since the online market was created three years ago as a requirement of the federal Affordable Care Act.
