Everton 2-1 Arsenal: Williams strikes late to down Gunners

A late Ashley Williams goal gave Everton their first Premier League win since October and denied Arsenal the chance to go top of the table.

Arsenal would have provisionally supplanted leaders Chelsea on goal difference with victory and took a 20th-minute lead when Alexis Sanchez's free-kick deflected in off Williams.

The Gunners are now only second to the Blues in the league standings following an unbeaten run of 14 games which sees them just three points behind the leaders.

Home supporters were on edge for the opening quarter of the game, which is perhaps explained by the fact that their side have gone into half time a goal down in five of their last six games here.

Arsenal made only one change from their 3-1 win over Stoke City, fit-again right-back Hector Bellerin replacing injured centre-back Shkodran Mustafi, and took a 20th-minute lead.

Everton battled back well, however, and were soon the side on top as Arsenal started to sit back a little more to hold off the direct running from wide positions.

With striker Romelu Lukaku isolated, Ross Barkley's passing awry and the defence jittery, Everton seemed there for the taking but Arsenal conceded a soft goal just before halftime. They slipped to a first league loss since the opening weekend of the season.

Everton ended the match with 10 men when Phil Jagielka was sent off in the third minute of injury time after picking up a second yellow card and in a frantic finish, Arsenal had two goal-bound shots cleared from near the line.

Williams then headed in Baines' c0rner to give his side the win.
