Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp: Jordan Henderson is lucky

While Barkley may have been lucky not to of been sent off, Henderson, on the other hand, is very lucky to have not picked up a serious injury - a view that's shared by Reds boss Jurgen Klopp.

"I think the players did a great performance. And, like I say, Ross is a good lad so I think it was just a mistimed one".

"There were a lot of question marks before the game about where the referee was from and the fact it was his first Merseyside derby, but he refereed the game very well".

"I think Ross was lucky and Hendo is lucky".

But it was Barkley's bad second-half challenge that stoked emotions more than anything on Monday, with the England worldwide receiving just a yellow card despite leaving Henderson in a heap on the floor for a matter of minutes.

He said: "It was a tough tackle". I don't need to say anything about this. "Maybe it was a red card for Barkley. If you're straight, you give Lovren his second yellow, Coleman a yellow and maybe a red card". Why did he give Seamus Coleman a yellow and not Dejan Lovren [during the "pushing" incidents]?

The Ligue 1 outfit are unbeaten so far in European competition this season and topped Group C after three wins and three draws. We were very unlucky in the group phase, we had to go very far, it was very hard to go to Turkey and Ukraine.

"It was cruel, the players did a great performance and I think the best 45 minutes the first 45 mins, the second-half more hard, we were not so risky as we were in the first-half, but still, we deserved more".

But Liverpool snatched a late victor courtesy of Sadio Mane's 94th minute goal.

It took over a minute for the smoke to clear while at least two supporters appeared to invade the pitch.

The result moved Liverpool back above Manchester City into second place, six points behind Chelsea.

"It was intense and a deserved win".

"The first half is really important for us because everybody has seen already that we can play really nice football but in this first half we could not play nice football". We will be better at reacting against this in a few months. "In the second-half, I thought we dominated and could have scored a couple more but, in the end, we're delighted with the 1-0 win". "It was a little bit late but you are going to get those in derby games".
