Police report 'casualties' in fire at warehouse party

Some of the structural changes made it extremely hard for people to escape, Reed said.

Chief Deloach-Reed described the building as "huge" and said fire officials were still trying to determine how the blaze started. Details about what led to the fire weren't immediately available.

The fire broke out during a party featuring musician Golden Donna's 100% Silk West Coast Tour. They are reporting at least nine dead as a result of the fire as well as 13 missing.

This is terrifying. An enormous fire broke out at a California club party on December 2, trapping many partygoers inside.

The fire reportedly broke out around 11:30 p.m. local time and, as of 4:00 a.m. local time, it was not under control.

Alameda County Sheriff's spokesman Ray Kelly said emergency responders are prepared for a "mass casualty event" that could involve "several dozen fatalities" after firefighters and others gain access to the building.

Oakland Fire Chief Teresa Deloche-Reed says the building was packed with furniture, mannequins and statues and that it did not have a clear entry or exit path. As of now, the cause of the fire is unknown.

Oakland Mayor Libby Schaaf said city officials are committed to sharing information quickly.

She said she has heard reports that some people may have been living there, but there were no bedrooms, per se.

ET, hosted by Employee of the Month's Catie Lazarus, followed by the awards show, hosted by Keegan-Michael Key , at 8 p.m. The red-carpet portion begins at 6:30 p.m.

When she tried to enter the building, Reed said she was "just able to get in about 10 feet".

The roof of the two-story warehouse in the city's Fruitvale district collapsed during the fire, complicating efforts to recover bodies, she told a press briefing.

What was originally the event page on Facebook for the show has turned to a safety check page, where concerned friends and family members are checking on the status of people they knew attended the concert.

Battalion Chief Lisa Baker said three sides of the building were on fire, the San Jose Mercury News reported.

Video footage posted on social media showed flames shooting from the structure, which was adorned with elaborate graffiti and colorful murals, as fire vehicles pumped plumes of water and heavy smoke engulfed the neighborhood.

"It appears that people either made it out or didn't make it out", he said.

Bob Mulè, a witness, told NBC News the building is a 24-hour artist collective.

"There is still a large portion of the building that still needs to be searched", she said.
