Cris Cyborg: I almost die from losing weight for a UFC fight - ESPN

Brazilian naturalized Brazilian fighter Cris Cyborg had to drop to 145 pounds to face Lina Lansberg in her last duel last September in Brasilia, Brazil. To do so, she had to drop 24 pounds in a week, a process she says, almost takes her life.

The mixed martial arts professional recalled an episode that made him question whether he could survive the process.

"I was in the tub slicing weight, and I thought 'I'm going to die here.' It was the worst weight loss in my life, "Cyborg said in an interview for the British newspaper The Sun .

Weight cuts are common in the UFC and the world Boxing, situations that occur as the fighters have to undergo weighing to be eligible to climb the octagon or the ring. But it also causes unpleasant situations for fighters, who may suffer from physical ills due to extreme changes.

"For the first time in my life, I did not warm up in the dressing room because I was too weak," Cyborg recalled. In spite of the weight reduction and the weakness that he felt just moments before the fight, Cyborg managed to bend to Lansberg, situation that in his words, propitiated to the UFC in wanting to offer another fight to him in barely two months and a half "I was invited to fight again, now yes to my normal weight and for the championship, but to ten weeks," he said.

"That decision is as important as the championship. I'm thinking about my health, "he said.
