Kremlin calls situation in Donbass exclusively internal Ukrainian conflict

The report said a second person in the auto was also killed in the explosion in Lugansk city.

"A frozen-conflict in the Donbass serves Russia's goals of preventing Ukraine from joining the European Union and North Atlantic Treaty Organisation".

The rebels' Lugansk Information Center reported Saturday that Lugansk People's Militia commander Oleg Anashchenko died in the explosion along with an unnamed person.

"The Ukrainian army command is preparing for an offensive along the entire line of engagement and plotting acts of sabotage at civil infrastructure facilities", he said. The past week has seen a flare-up in hostilities in which more than 40 people have been killed in both government- and rebel-held areas.

According to the official, Moscow would welcome a meeting between the presidents of Ukraine and the United States, Petro Poroshenko and Donald Trump, respectively, "if it were to contribute to the resolution of this intra-Ukrainian conflict".

For now, the USA seems unwilling to ease sanctions on Russian Federation for its activities in Ukraine.

The US and European Union imposed sanctions on Russian Federation in response to its actions in eastern Ukraine and Crimea.
