Louis Cardinals RHP Alex Reyes to Have Season-Ending Tommy John Surgery

St. Louis Cardinals prized rookie right-hander Alex Reyes was scheduled to have an MRI on his pitching elbow Tuesday afternoon.

St. Louis forwarded the exam results to Dr. James Andrews for a second opinion.

Reyes is schedule to have surgery in Jupiter, Florida on Thursday.

This development is bad news for Reyes and for the Cardinals, who were hoping that Reyes could be part of their 2017 season.

Trump on NAFTA: "Have to make it fair"
Any changes to trade policy that are detrimental to Mexico will likely lead to retaliation. The EU is Mexico's third-largest trading partner, after the United States and China.

Assuming Reyes does undergo Tommy John surgery in the near future, he would miss all of 2017, and most likely the early part of 2018.

Reyes had been preparing to pitch for the Dominican Republic in the World Baseball Classic when he complained of elbow soreness. His fastball averaged more than 97 miles per hour and touches 100. "We'll save that for tomorrow", Mozeliak said. Reyes originally broke into the major leagues last season en route to making 12 appearances including five starts as a member of the Cardinals. "There was a maturity".

The Cardinals have better pitching depth than they did a year ago, and Mozeliak mentioned Michael Wacha, Luke Weaver and Trevor Rosenthal as pitchers who will be in consideration to be in the team's rotation this season. Reyes was expected to play a key role with the Cardinals this season as potentially their fifth starter.

Rosenthal had 93 saves over the next two seasons, then struggled with command and injuries previous year.
