Puzder Out Of Running For Labor Secretary

The Communications workers of America were celebrating Wednesday following the withdrawl of the nomination of fast-food exec Andrew Puzder from consideration for Labor Secretary. Stay on top of breaking news stories with the ABC11 News AppPuzder says "while I won't be serving in the administration, I fully support the President and his highly qualified team".

Puzder had come under fire for employing an undocumented immigrant for several years (for which he just paid back taxes) and faced scrutiny over previous allegations that he abused his former wife. There are already four firm Republican no votes, which is enough to keep him from winning the vote of approval on the Senate Floor. But the last straws may have been a lawsuit brought by his workers for labor violations and an unearthed film of Puzder's ex-wife on the Oprah Winfrey Show in 1990, alleging that he had abused her and had "vowed revenge" for exposing him.

That was followed shortly by reports that Puzder himself was planning to withdraw his nomination before his confirmation hearing, scheduled for Thursday morning. "He does not belong anywhere near the Labor Department, let alone at the head of it. Puzder's disdain for the American worker, the very people he would be responsible for protecting, is second to none".

That makes Puzder the first of President Trump's cabinet picks to fail to make it through the confirmation process - and could signal the first mini-break with the White House among Republican ranks.

Puzder is the CEO of CKE Restaurants, which is the parent company of fast-food chains Hardee's and Carl's Jr. But as Wednesday progressed, it became clear to Republican Senate leaders that they did not have the votes to confirm him.

"This is a win for working families in MI and across the country", she said.

Puzder also opposed wages in minimum wage, which was a rallying point for many who protested his nomination.

Asked why, the source said, "I think he's very exhausted of the abuse".

And it comes less than 48 hours after national security adviser Michael Flynn was forced to resign after making misleading statements about conversations with the Russian ambassador, amid an ongoing scandal over Russian influence enveloping the White House.
