Russia's UN Ambassador Vitaly Churkin Dies Suddenly in NYC

Russia's ambassador to the United Nations Vitaly Churkin has been confirmed dead in NY at age 64.

Russia's ambassador to the United Nations died Monday at age 64, The Associated Press reported. It was the day before his 65th birthday.

"The outstanding Russian diplomat died in harness", the statement said.

"We offer honest condolences to the family of Vitaly Ivanovich Churkin", the ministry said.

Vitaly Churkin was at the Russian embassy on East 67th Street when he became sick with a "cardiac condition" around 9:30 a.m., sources said.

The Russian Permanent Mission in a statement that Churkin was in his office fulfilling his duties when the tragedy occurred in the afternoon of February 20.

He has been Russia's Ambassador to the United Nations since April 8, 2006.

Russia's foreign ministry announced the news but provided no details about Churkin's cause of death.

French U.N. Ambassador Francois Delattre, too, said he and Churkin had "always worked together in a spirit of mutual respect and personal friendship", despite their divides. Please, remember which country you represent. A career diplomat, Churkin in the past served as an ambassador to Canada and Belgium, and as a liaison to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. Thomson said he'd found Churkin was always open to talking with colleagues, even those from small countries.

Putin appointed Churkin as Russia's ambassador to the United Nations in April 2006, and he would continue to accuse the West of hypocrisy and meddling in Russia's perceived sphere of influence throughout his tenure. Ambassador Churkin kept working till the very last moment.

"A top diplomat and a good friend", he tweeted.
