Things You Should Know About Trump's Labor Secretary Pick, R. Alexander Acosta

He was the first Hispanic person to be named an assistant attorney general in the U.S. Department of Justice, holding that position during George W. Bush's presidency; Acosta headed the department's Civil Rights Division.

Matthew Haller, senior vice president for communications and public affairs at the International Franchise Association, said the IFA was impressed with Acosta's background and thought he would have an easier time gaining Senate confirmation.

Several Hispanic lawmakers and business groups agree with Trump's claim that Acosta will be a tremendous secretary of labor. Most recently, he was the dean of Florida International University College of Law.

YUKI NOGUCHI, BYLINE: In announcing his new pick, the president touted the fact that Acosta is no stranger to Washington. In 2002, he was appointed as a member of the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB). The Senate [Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions] committee must do their due diligence in vetting Mr. Acosta thoroughly on all of the issues.

Trump said he had just spoken with Acosta before coming to the East Room for the hastily arranged news conference, where he made the announcement.

He told CNN Monday: "The ordinance has been withdrawn but has now been introduced nearly unchanged into the parliamentary process".

A search on the money-tracking site OpenSecrets.org found Acosta has donated to Republican politicians a few times in sums of no more than $1,000.

President Donald Trump's new nominee for labor secretary, Alexander Acosta, is an experienced prosecutor and a conservative who is likely to cheer mainstream Republicans-and a reminder that even as he breaks long-established norms, the president has chosen many Republicans who might have served in other GOP administrations. "We will schedule a hearing promptly after his nomination papers arrive in the Senate, and I look forward to exploring his views on how American workers can best adjust to the rapidly changing workplace". As U.S. Attorney, Acosta focused on health care fraud violations and targeted white collar crime.

"Throughout his career, Alex Acosta has been a passionate advocate for equal opportunity for all Americans", President Trump said in a statement.

It's unclear whether Trump's aides asked the immigration question before the nomination, even though such issues have sunk past presidential nominees.

Dean Acosta additionally serves as the Chairman of U.S. Century Bank, the largest domestically-owned Hispanic community bank in Florida and one of the fifteen largest Hispanic community banks in the nation. He once clerked for then-Appeals Court judge Justice Samuel Alito.
