Man Shot Dead In Greenpoint Landlord-Tenant Dispute, Police Say

A retired NYPD cop shot his landlord - possibly over a parking spot - and then barricaded himself inside a Greenpoint building Monday afternoon, prompting police snipers to perch on nearby rooftops and other officers to flood the area, authorities said. Traffic was diverted off McGuinness Boulevard near the Pulaski Bridge. Witnesses told police the shooting occurred outside on the sidewalk.

No identifications of either the suspect or the victim have been released.

According to investigators, Barrett barricaded himself in his apartment after shooting the victim outside.

The victim was crossing Meeker Avenue mid-block when the driver hit him, police said. He is a retired NYPD officer. Barrett was later charged with attempted murder, robbery, assault, burglary and menacing.

"The officers set up a perimeter, they called for emergency service as a standard", said NYPD Deputy Inspector Michael Kemper.

Dozens of police cars swarmed the neighborhood as police responded, including at least one armored vehicle, Chopper 4 over the scene showed. None of this is a surprise to the suspect's old friend, who says Barrett's problems with his neighbors seemed to be getting worse and worse. "Somebody recently stabbed his tires", Andino said.
