Accused Killer in Brutal Sword Attack To Face A Judge

Jackson told police he had harbored hatred toward black men for at least 10 years, authorities said.

James Harris Jackson is shown being walked to an NYPD vehicle on March 21, 22, 2017. "The entire Friends School community extends our deepest sympathy to the family and friends of Timothy Caughman, the victim of this senseless and incomprehensible act". Jackson apparently brought his laptop to NY and officers are awaiting a search warrant in order to examine it, WABC notes.

Authorities say he came to Manhattan from Baltimore with the aim of killing black men, knowing it would garner news coverage in the media capital of the world.

Outside court, Jackson's attorney, Sam Talkin, said he would consider an insanity defense for his client. "If the facts are anything near what the allegations are, then we're going to address the obvious psychological issues that are present in this case", he said.

He not yet entered a plea.

Jackson had harbored a hatred toward black men for more than a decade and once in the city started stalking them, police said.

Jackson's lawyer, Sam Talkin, cautioned against a rush to judgment about his client.

Six volunteers travelling from Juba to Pibor to provide aid, were killed on this Saturday ambush. These attacks against aid workers and aid assets are utterly reprehensible.

Caughman lived in a homeless shelter on West 36th Street and was sifting through the garbage when Jackson allegedly attacked, the New York Times reports. He was subsequently charged with murder later on Wednesday.

"We're here to just honor him and to make sure everybody is just saying his name", a man at the vigil said.

On Monday night, Timothy Caughman was stabbed with a sword in New York City while collecting bottles on a sidewalk in Manhattan, later dying of his injuries at a nearby hospital. Police say he allegedly wrote a manifesto about attacking blacks in New York City. USA military services don't immediately have records concerning Jackson's possible service. The next court date is March 27.

James Harris Jackson who was bent on making a racist attack took a bus to NY to carry out the rampage, police said Wednesday.

Prosecutors in NY are saying that the targeted killing of a black man in Midtown was most likely an act of terrorism, after self-proclaimed white supremacist James Harris Jackson, 28, allegedly stabbed 66-year-old Timothy Caughman to death.

Jackson turned himself in at a police station in Times Square soon after midnight on Wednesday and was arrested for murder, police said.

"More than an unspeakable human tragedy, this is an assault on what makes this the greatest city in the world: our inclusiveness and our diversity", New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio said in a statement.
