Babri Masjid demolition: Indian SC restores conspiracy charges against BJP leaders

The razing of the Babri Masjid incited nationwide riots between Hindus and Muslims; around 2,000 people were killed.

Union minister and BJP leader Uma Bharti today dismissed the Congress demand for her resignation after the Supreme Court ordered that she be tried for criminal conspiracy in the 1992 Babri Masjid demolition case.

The CBI had said that they have evidence that the leaders were part of the plan to bring down the mosque, asking that the Supreme Court allow 14 people, including these leaders, to be put on trial for criminal conspiracy.

Charges against six other BJP and Sangh Parivar leaders were also revived. Splitting the accused into two groups and holding the trial in different courts in different districts has been an important factor in slowing down the judicial process.

The SC has ordered a joint trial of the two sets of cases by transferring the trial from Rae Bareli to the Lucknow court. The court said the trial must conclude within two years.

According the Indian media reports, the bench ruled that there will be no fresh trial because of framing of conspiracy charges against senior BJP leaders.

His trial will begin after his term ends, the Supreme Court ruled.
