Cruz: Close House race in Kansas 'a warning sign'

Estes handily won the district's rural counties.

Thompson was not supposed to come this close to winning in a district where Trump and Pompeo both won by about 30 percentage points last November, said Burdett Loomis, a political science professor at the University of Kansas. Thompson made the race a lot closer than people would have expected earlier this year, said his campaign manager Chris Pumpelly.

Liberal activists are unleashing their fury on the Democratic Party establishment for failing to recognize that rampant disgust with President Donald Trump is now fueling an enthusiasm among voters that could turn even Republican districts blue.

State Treasurer Estes, 60, will represent the Kansas 4th congressional district replacing Mike Pompeo, who Trump named as Central Intelligence Agency director.

Estes carried Sumner County by 27 points on Tuesday. "A wonderful guy, I need his help on Healthcare & Tax Cuts (Reform)".

The Republicans infused the Estes campaign with additional funds, produced automated phone calls recorded by Trump, and sent in Republican US Senator Ted Cruz on Monday to campaign on Estes' behalf.

Dominating the outside spending in these races are the Congressional Leadership Fund, a super political action committee linked to House GOP leaders, and the National Republican Congressional Committee, a national party committee. "I finally did. I realized this was important". The Democratic victories in IL prove that the shockingly close race in Kansas is no fluke, and that no Republican is safe. She was for public schools and for Medicaid expansion, key issues in small towns trying to protect schools and rural hospitals. Included among them was Belle Plaine homemaker Charlene Health, 52, who cast her vote for Estes. Thompson appealed to Hauser in part because both men are ex-military but also because "I don't believe in the (GOP) line".

Trump lets states block some Planned Parenthood money
President Donald Trump just signed a law that could make it a lot easier for the government to defund Planned Parenthood. More than a dozen states, including Arizona, have tried withholding funds from Planned Parenthood in recent years.

In the final days of the race, Texas Sen.

But in a sign of nervousness, Republicans poured money into the race late to bolster Estes. The president joined the effort for Estes through social media and get-out-the-vote calls.

"The DCCC will continue its longstanding and failed model of helping only most favored candidates until grassroots disgust makes that stance untenable", said Jeff Hauser, a longtime progressive strategist.

Trump supporters were relieved 00 and pleased. The Belle Plaine couple voted for Estes. If he had been a state senator, he would have started with 70,000 people and better name recognition, Loomis said.

"Our enemy right now is complacency", Cruz said at a rally. The open seats are in Georgia's 6th District, Montana's at-large district, South Carolina's 5th District and California's 34th District. The district has been hard hit by the downturn in the agricultural economy and the loss of hundreds of well-paying, blue-collar jobs in aircraft manufacturing plants.

Democrats hold only three other districts that even gave Trump a majority. Democrat Xavier Becerra left the House in 2016 and successfully ran for California State Attorney General, leaving the 34th district open.
