Mary Keitany breaks a marathon record with 3rd London win

Kenya's Mary Keitany set a new world record to win the women's London Marathon as Daniel Wanjiru took victory in the men's race.

Radcliffe still holds the overall record of 2:15.25, which she set in a mixed gender race at the London Marathon in 2003 when she used male runners to help set the pace.

This take is a little tautological as anyone who wins London is by definition a stud, but what Wanjiru has done in his last two marathons (2:05:21 course record in Amsterdam, fending off Bekele to win in London) is truly impressive.

Bekele finished nine seconds adrift whilst Wanjiru's compatriot Bedan Karoki was third in 2hr 07:41.

Bekele, 34, a three-time Olympic champion on the track, had been hoping to break Dennis Kimetto's men's world record of 2:02.57 and asked pacemakers to deliver him to the halfway mark in 61.30. Ms Jakhu said: "After learning about how extremely small a charity LAM is, I felt raising funds for it could make a real impact".

British wheelchair hero David Weir got the day off to a good start when he stormed to his seventh victory in the race as speculation rumbles over his retirement. That's why I slowed the pace.

Beverley-Jo Fisher is taking on the marathon to raise money for EDS - a rare genetic condition that affects connective tissues. "I know it won't be easy, but the money I raise will go directly to the British Lung Foundation's work raising awareness of lung disease, the dangers that cause it and how to look after your lungs".

"I've also received lots of advice and encouragement from Mary and Florence, so I thank them for that", she said. I came across a guy in Ireland doing 100 back to back marathons, and that got me thinking about 365 marathons for the year.

Ranging from running veterans to marathon first timers - they will have ran a combined total of 943.2 marathon miles when they cross the finish line.
