More problems for McLaren as Hamilton tops testing

World championship leader Sebastian Vettel will return to normal testing duties for Ferrari on Wednesday, having spent Tuesday working on Pirelli's 2018 evaluation project.

"Our focus was on advancing our understanding of the tyres and also the rear of the vehicle so that we can improve our long runs - particularly during the race and on the SuperSoft compound".

With a late short run, Vandoorne was able to set a lap of 1m32.108s - just eight tenths off Bottas's best lap of the day.

Bottas managed to complete more mileage than any other driver at the Bahrain International Circuit, turning in 143 laps with a best lap of 1:31.280. A lengthily stoppage came after just eight laps when the auto returned to the garage for a planned setup change and a quick fix only to remain there for several hours following a power supply issue to the garage itself. Daniil Kvyat is splitting the day in the Toro Rosso with teammate Carlos Sainz and at the midway point of the day had completed 61 laps after working through a series of setup changes in the morning. That led to an extended period of downtime in the garage as the team conducted a series of systems checks, but the vehicle reappeared in the early afternoon.

Fernando Alonso joined his McLaren Honda team-mate on the sidelines on lap 34 when he had a driveshaft issue. And then we came here and he said I did the better job and he acknowledged that.

McLaren have produced a promising chassis this season but have been unable to show its potential because of Honda s failure to deliver a reliable engine.

Force India will split running between Esteban Ocon and Sergio Perez as it continues work on evaluation of new parts, while Kevin Magnussen will be tasked with further work on Haas's brakes. The team has struggled with its brakes since it entered F1 previous year and despite a successful update from Brembo at the Chinese Grand Prix, a switch Carbon Industrie could still be on the cards.

Bottas struggled with rear tyre life during the race, slipping to third, and admitted afterwards that he and Mercedes had to investigate the cause.

More encouraging, though, was that Vandoorne completed 81 laps - more than a race distance.
