Spanish Police Arrest 8 Suspected of Ties to Brussels Attacks

All of the suspects were living in Catalonia, Spain, and are between 30 and 40 years old, the AP reported.

Sources close to the investigation told El Periodico that several of those held in raids in and near Barcelona were in the Belgian capital two days before the terror attacks at Brussels Airport and Maalbeek tube station.

Spanish police on Tuesday arrested four men with alleged links to suspects held in Belgium over their involvement in the Brussels airport and metro attacks a year ago, officials said.

The group has been linked to the November 2015 Paris attackers.

In an interview with Catalan TV, Josep Lluis Trapero, the commander of the local police, noted the detainees had a "clear membership" of the Islamic State, and that investigation could help find the chief plotters of the terrorist attacks that hit Belgium and France.

The authorities said the suspects were also being investigated for drug trafficking, robbery and other crimes.

Documents, computers and memory drives were seized in the raids as well as at least three guns and drugs including marijuana.

A series of dawn raids on 12 properties in and around the city saw the suspects arrested at the culmination of an eight-month operation.

Not including Tuesday's arrests, Spain has detained 22 people in 16 separate operations this year in connection with extremism, according to Interior Ministry figures. They were claimed by so-called Islamic State (IS).
