Gather the materials you need. Need wood, rope, string, 7.5 cm (3-inch) desk screws, wood glue, fine grit sandpaper, two stainless steel carabiners And the tools appropriate for the job.

  • In terms of tools, you will need a saw, leveler, tape measure, sanding block and cordless drill.
  • Purchase sufficient pressure treated wood having a thickness of 4 cm (1.5 inches) to complete the project. You will need enough to make pieces that are 18.5 cm (7.25) inches wide: one that measures 90 cm (36 inches) long and two pieces that are 10 cm (4 inches) long. A 2 x 8 board that is 1.2 m (4 ft) long will allow you to work more easily. If you have never worked with wood before, keep in mind that the actual width and thickness of a 2 x 8 wood is 18.5 and 4 cm (7.25 x 1.5 inches) respectively.
  • You will need a rope that is twice as long as the swing height you plan to do (from branch to seat) plus an additional 3.5 m (12 ft) length. Use a braided polypropylene cord that is at least 1 cm (3/8 inch) in diameter. Keep in mind that the nylon rope is usually too slippery to make a good swing and one made of natural fiber will rot over time. Cut the rope into four parts: two 3 m (10 ft) and two that are 30 cm (1 ft) more than the height of the swing.
