The Native Bees Study in Urbana - UC Berkeley Urban Bee Lab

For almost all types of plants, the same groups of bees characteristically associated in each of the original 7 cities were found. This was especially notable with native bees. The two most attractive plant families were Asteraceae (which provide pollen and nectar) and Lamiaceae (which provide nectar). With this type of information, gardens can be planned with predictable relationships between bees and ornamental plants. (See "Seasonal Bee Gardening" to learn how to create your own garden.)

Curious curious My first picture of the day was a Sooty Thrush (Turdus nigrescens) which gave me a little fear. It seems to be necessary to say the famous phrase "Here's Johnny" from The Shinning.

Every year we are adding new species of bees to all our Urban sites. To date we have found that La Canada Flintridge has the largest number of bees with 112 species, followed by Ukiah and Berkeley. Research is ongoing and is being used to write a field guide on California garden bees and their flowers. The book will also discuss ways to monitor bees and how to use bee gardens for a variety of purposes ranging from environmental education to conservation to scientific research. A second related book is in the planning stage and will focus on a step-by-step approach to designing and implementing a garden bees' habitat.
