150-Acre Skirball Fire Spurs Evacuations, Freeway Closures In California

The Los Angeles Fire Department said that the Skirball Fire, named after the nearby Skirball Center, was expected to grow.

The mayor urged residents to heed orders to evacuate - saying, "Do not wait". The La Tuna Fire in September also sent massive amounts of smoke into the air above Los Angeles and forced the evacuation of hundreds of homes. No civilian injuries or deaths were reported. Firefighting crews set up on the southbound side of the 405 to prevent the fire from jumping the freeway, and northbound vehicles were being turned back.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency authorized the use of federal funds to help battle the Creek Fire, which FEMA said was threatening more than 7,100 homes and two SoCal Edison power transmission lines.

Some voluntary evacuations were recommended in the general area, including east of Veterans Park to Pacoima Canyon; Between Sayre and Polk streets north of the 210 Freeway; and between Polk and Bledsoe streets. A second center is available to evacuees at the Sunland Senior Center at 8640 Fenwick Street.

Evacuation centers have been established at Delano Recreation Center, 15100 Erwin St., Van Nuys; Balboa RC, 17015 Burbank Blvd., Van Nuys; Sherman Oaks RC, 14201 Huston St., Sherman Oaks; and Westwood RC, 1350 Sepulveda Blvd., Westwood.

Students at a variety of Los Angeles Unified School District campuses were affected by the fire, with students diverted to alternate campuses to keep them out of the fire's path.

Fierce Santa Ana winds whipped up the most destructive of the wildfires on Monday evening. More than 350 firefighters from 52 engine companies were deployed to the scene, supported by helicopters that were making water drops, said LAFD Fire Chief Ralph Terrazas. "It's critical residents stay ready and evacuate immediately if told to do so", Brown said.
