Google and Amazon bickering steps up a level

On Tuesday, Google shut down its video service on Amazon's touchscreen-enabled smart speaker and plans to stop supporting YouTube on the Fire TV by January 1. Meanwhile, the e-commerce site thinks Google is setting a disappointing precedent by selectively blocking access to an open site.

Both companies should reach at an agreement and resolve these issues to avoid inconvenience to consumers.

Google claims that the way the Echo Show uses YouTube was in violation of its rules, and that it was unfair that Google was being forced to support Amazon when the online marketplace had stopped stocking its products.

With each having a significant share of the leverage, it is going to be down to who blinks first, but with Amazon's business model based on low-profit margin ecosystem lock into a non-Google version of Android, any compromise on its side will be costly.

In September this year, Google removed YouTube access from Amazon's new Echo Show smart speaker for "violating terms of service" of the app.

A Google spokesperson said: "We've been trying to reach agreement with Amazon to give consumers access to each other's products and services".

According to the data from research firm eMarketer, Amazon's voice-controlled devices have been outsold Google's devices. As a result, and because Amazon does not carry Google devices such as Google Home, Chromecast, or Nest devices, it has pulled YouTube from the Amazon devices.

There were also reports that Google could be creating a smart screen device to compete with the Amazon Echo Show. And what if this gets worse and Google cuts off Nest from Alexa? This shows that Google wants to impose its own rules on how YouTube is rendered on Amazon's devices, but that doesn't seem to imply that Google is seeking control.

The Chocolate Factory on Tuesday said it would be filing suit against the Bezos Bunch after it failed to cut a deal to allow its own streaming services to coexist with those of Amazon.

Amazon made the decision to not sell Google devices in 2015, since the Chromecast didn't support Amazon Prime Video.
