Health officials: 135 people hospitalized with the flu this season

Flu shot producers expect to make between 151 million and 166 million doses of vaccine this flu season.

No other details have been released.

If you get sick, look out for severe aches and pains in your muscles and joints, notable fatigue and weakness, headaches and a high fever. That death reported in mid-November involved a child age four or younger.

Despite its low effectiveness, Brammer urges everyone aged 6 months and older to get a flu shot. You can also get the flu by touching a surface or object that has the flu virus on it and then touching your mouth, eyes or nose.

Health officials say is important for those experiencing flu-like symptoms to consult with a health care provider as soon as possible. Getting vaccinated yourself also protects people around you, including those who are more vulnerable to serious flu illness.

After a slow start in October, flu season in the United States is gaining speed, particularly in the South.

And Brammer added that other types of flu are circulating, including influenza A H1N1 and a couple of influenza B viruses. Flannery said highest-risk patients are the elderly, pregnant women and infants, and people who have underlying conditions, such as lung or heart conditions.

Though the accuracy and effectiveness of each year's vaccine varies, this year's seems on track to provide good protection against the Influenza A strains now predominating, health officials say.

Flu shots are available at more than 300 locations around Vermont.

"We have probably given an excessive 300 flu shots so far and we still have flu shots", Sheila Hubenka, a TB charge nurse with the health district said. Last year's flu vaccine effectiveness was just 42%, the CDC estimated this year, while preliminary estimates published in the New England Journal of Medicine suggest that this year's vaccine may be just 10% effective. "Many are hospitalized and some die".

Lisa Smith said she thinks everyone should think critically about the vaccine before they roll up a sleeve.

This year's vaccine uses strains recommended by the World Health Organization in February: A/H1N1, A/H3N2 and B/Victoria.

"We do see a predominance of the H3N2 virus that was common last season", Flannery said.
