Russian Federation calls United States threat to destroy North Korea a 'bloodthirsty tirade'

Lavrov's statements come two days after North Korea launched a new type of intercontinental ballistic missile that is capable of striking the USA mainland.

Russian Federation yesterday accused the United States of trying to provoke North Korean leader Kim Jong Un into "flying off the handle" over his missile programme to hand Washington a pretext to destroy his country.

North Korea's latest Hwasong-15 missile test "went higher, frankly, than any previous shot they've taken", Pentagon chief James Mattis said shortly after the launch.

The missile launch was a more advanced missile compared to the Hwasong-14 which North Korea tested back in July.

"Let them say it directly... then we can take a decision about how to react", said Lavrov, who also rejected calls by Nikki Haley, the USA ambassador to the United Nations, for Russian Federation to cut ties with Pyongyang, stopping the sale of oil products and deporting North Korean workers.

"If they would be willing to close their missions in North Korea altogether, that is also something we would be supportive of", she said, while adding that Tillerson had not specifically asked in his meeting with Gabriel for Germany to recall its ambassador.

Mr Trump has been trying to apply more pressure on the hermit kingdom and re-designated them a state sponsor of terrorism, meaning the U.S. can enforce even more sanctions on Kim Jong-un's regime.

"The latest USA actions look created to deliberately provoke Pyongyang into taking new extreme action", Mr Lavrov told reporters in Belarus, according to a Russian Foreign Ministry transcript.

World War 3 fears have been raised and North Korea expert Gordon Change has warned rogue dictator Kim Jong-un could spark a "global conflict".

"We were encouraged by that approach, but suddenly they are conducting surprise military exercise in October, then November, now we announced in December", - said the Minister.

State news agency KCNA called its so-called new missile "the most powerful ICBM" and said it "meets the goal of the completion of the rocket weaponry system development". "They've proposed a freeze-for-freeze solution a number of times, in which the US would suspend its military exercises in exchange for North Korea suspending its missile testing and nuclear development", Armstrong told ThinkProgress. "We do not see any reasonable alternative to it", it said.

North Korea has been accelerating its threat to the United States and to the globe with recent missile tests.
